Abstract

The increasing use of digital multimedia in language education has created new opportunities for enhancing Arabic language learning, but the effectiveness of multimedia depends largely on how information is designed and presented to learners. This study aims to examine how cognitive multimedia principles are implemented in Arabic language learning and how these principles shape learners’ cognitive processing during multimedia-based instruction. Employing a qualitative case study design, data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and analysis of multimedia learning materials. The data were analyzed thematically by drawing on Mayer’s Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning and Cognitive Load Theory. The findings indicate that eight cognitive multimedia principles coherence, signaling, modality, redundancy management, spatial contiguity, temporal contiguity, segmenting, and pre-training were reflected in multimedia-based Arabic instruction. The implementation of these principles supported learners’ attention, organization of information, integration of verbal and visual representations, and processing of Arabic vocabulary, pronunciation, listening input, and grammatical information. However, excessive textual information, irrelevant visual elements, poor synchronization, and unnecessary repetition were found to potentially increase extraneous cognitive load. The study concludes that multimedia should not be viewed merely as a technological resource but as a cognitive-pedagogical tool. Intentional application of cognitive multimedia principles can help teachers create more focused, comprehensible, and cognitively manageable Arabic language learning environments.
